About Us
Brikama Area Council was established in 1965 by an act of parliament, and following the change of Government in 1994, a new Local Government Act was enacted in 2002, which gave Councils their corporate body status with perpetual succession and a common seal with power to sue and be sued in their corporate name.
The Brikama Area Council is situated in the West Coast Region of the Republic of The Gambia, with its headquarters located in Brikama Town, Kombo Central District. It is about 30 (thirty) kilometers from the capital City of Banjul.
In addition, the Brikama Area Council, which covers the whole of the West Coast Region, has a land area of 1,764 square kilometers. It is divided into 9 (nine) districts, each headed by a Chief, 28 (twenty-eight) Wards, each headed by an elected Councilor, and a total of 260 (two hundred and sixty) villages headed by an Alkalou (village head).
The Council is the most populous with a total population of 699,704 according to the 2013 population and Housing Census Provisional results, thus representing 37% of the Gambia’s population, which grew by 38.35% while that of
Area Council grew by 76.60% between 2003 to 2013.
Due to its proximity to the capital city, the Brikama Area Council continues to undergo rapid urbanization.
